Effect of ethylene biosynthetic inhibitors on the vase life of cut Cymbidium.

The effect of postharvest treatment of Cymbidium (cultivars Oriental King, Super Lady and Husky Honey) flowers with ethylene biosynthetic inhibitors (silver thiosulfate (STS; 1 mM), aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AGV; 0.5, 1 or 2 mM) or aminoisobutyric acid (AIBA; 5 or 10 mM)) on vase life was investigated. AVG treatment (1 mM) was the most effective in retarding the decrease in FW and the evolution of ethylene observed in control flowers, and increasing vase life. No visible signs of senescence (development of red colour on flower lip, petal wilting and abscission) were observed 24 days after pretreatment of flowers with AVG. The pedicels and peduncles of AVG-treated flowers contained less soluble sugar and more starch than controls.
