Precooling and postharvest chemical treatment of Golden Delicious and Fuji apples.

Golden Delicious and Fuji apples harvested in Fraiburgo, Santa Catarina, were dipped or not dipped in 2% CaCl2, precooled by immersion in circulating water at 1 deg C for 7 or 45 min. to reduce flesh temperature to 10 deg or 4.5 deg , respectively, and dipped in the fungicide iprodione (150 g ai/100 litres) during or after precooling. Golden Delicious fruits were evaluated after 5 months' storage in air at 1 deg and after 8 months' storage in 1.5% O2 + 4% CO2 at 1 deg . Fuji fruits were evaluated after 6 months' storage in air at 1 deg and after 8 months' storage in 2.5% O2 + 0.4% CO2 at 2 deg . Precooling to 4.5 deg or 10 deg reduced shrivelling and weight loss but cooling to 4.5 deg increased percentage decay and splitting. CaCl2 treatment reduced percentage decay after wounding. Fungicide applied during precooling gave the best control of storage decay but increased fruit shrivelling in fruits precooled to 4.5 deg .
