Improving the quality of export litchis.

Trials were conducted during the 1995/96 season at the ITSC in South Africa on alternatives to S fumigation (a practice increasingly opposed by importing countries) for litchi [Litchi] postharvest treatment. The trials evaluated the use of (1) acids in combination with various coatings, (2) steam in combination with hydrochloric acid, a fungicide and an antitranspirant, and (3) hydrocooling of fruits after harvest followed by packing in boxes with less ventilation than the standard packaging. The results indicated that citric acid has potential as an aid to retain litchi skin colour in addition to conferring resistance to fungal infection. The results are preliminary and further research with preparations containing acids used in the food industry, antioxidants and edible coatings is to be conducted during the 1996/97 season. Hydrocooling seemed to be beneficial in that hydrocooled fruits lost less mass during storage than controls. However, research on the potential benefits offset against hydr

ocooler installation and running costs is required.
