Root injuries in sugar beets as affected step wise by lifting, dumping, and cleaning.

In a series of investigations carried out in 1990-94 on the performance of different lifting and cleaning equipment, root injury was assessed during the various steps of harvesting and handling operations. Measurements of tap root breakages, bruises, and cracks were made according to the IIRB standards. Samples of beets were taken from the elevator and tank of the harvester, and from the clamp, grab, and lorry load after cleaning. Although the main part of the damage of the roots proved to occur at an early stage in the harvesting process, each step of handling that follows the lifting operation, such as dumping, loading, cleaning etc., increased the damage level significantly. This increase can easily exceed any stated difference in damage level between different harvester manufacturers.
