Pathology and control of soil-borne fungal pathogens of potato.

Worldwide potato diseases including those caused by Verticillium dahliae, Rhizoctonia solani, Spongospora subterranea and a group normally considered as tuber-borne (including Colletotrichum coccodes, Helminthosporium solani and Fusarium spp.) are discussed in this review. It is suggested that the long-term persistence of survival structures, difficulties in reducing inoculum and lack of good sources of resistance generally hinder the control of soilborne fungal pathogens. Postharvest fungicide treatment of seed or ware potatoes does not entirely alleviate storage problems.
