Development of banana quality in the field. Determining assessment criteria.

Banana quality varies widely throughout the year in West Indian banana plantations, especially those located in lowland areas. Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum musae, develops on the fruit peel during shipping operations and as fruits ripen. Yields from 2 plantations, located at 2 separate sites representative of special geographic zones in Guadeloupe, were monitored for 1 year to determine the traits linked with fruit quality potential in the field. Three factors were involved in rot formation: the physiological status of fruits, pathogen pressure and the extent of infection in the field. Six descriptors for fruit quality assessment in the field were identified and validated. Use of these diagnostic tools to evaluate fruit quality at the harvesting stage could be of interest for a potential diagnostic survey of all banana plantations in Guadeloupe.
