Cashew kernel fungal rot in the Brazilian northeast.

Approx. 10% of the annual cashew nut yield in the Brazilian northeast is unsuitable for industrial processing and human consumption. Surveys carried out during 3 years in 4 states (Bahia, Ceara, Piaui and Rio Grande do Norte) revealed the presence of 26 fungal species associated with cashew kernel rots. Species of Aspergillus and Penicillium were found most frequently, reaching 81 and 10% occurrence, respectively. Other pathogenic fungi included Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata] and Lasiodiplodia [Botryodiplodia] theobromae. Control measures are discussed.
