Citrus brown rot caused by Phytophthora palmivora and P. nicotianae.

Grapefruit showing symptoms of fruit decay and brown rot were observed at the plant quarantine inspection station in Yokohama, Japan, in 1993 and their pathogens were identified. Three isolates obtained from diseased fruit caused brown rot of grapefruit and other citrus species. One isolate was identified as P. palmivora and the others were identified as P. nicotianae on the basis of their morphological characteristics and cardinal growth temp. This is the first report of disease of citrus caused by P. palmivora in Japan. It is suggested that P. palmivora and P. nicotianae are new pathogens of citrus brown rot disease.
