Chemical facilitator for infection of epicarp of Citrus limon by Penicillium digitatum.

A water suspension of conidia (106/ml) of P. digitatum caused green mould on 65% of the incised lemon epicarps, whereas infection was 3% on incised epicarps washed with water. The upper (oily) and lower (aqueous) centrifuged fractions of the filtrate of mechanically crushed lemon peel were topically applied to washed incisions, and caused green mould on 92 and 12% of the treated incisions, respectively. It is suggested that the oily fraction, is essential for infection by P. digitatum and may contain a facilitating factor(s). One facilitator isolated from the oily fraction was a colourless, lemon-like odiferous liquid, identified as limonene by MS and NMR analyses. When authentic limonene ((R)-(+)-limonene) was applied, 93% of the washed incisions became infected. Limonene did not facilitate conidial germination and germ tube elongation of P. digitatum, whereas the aqueous fraction promoted conidial germination and germ tube elongation, but did not facilitate infection by P. digitatum through wo

unded and washed sites.
