New crops as a possible solution for the troubled Israeli export market.

With a view to helping the troubled Israeli agricultural export industry, an R&D project for the introduction and domestication of rare and wild fruit and nut trees as new crops in the Negev Desert was initiated in 1984. The project covered approximately 40 different species (listed) considered to be potential new export crops. In the 1st stage, which lasted about 10 years, survival, growth, phenology, yield and quality of seedlings was assessed. Many species did not survive. However, 4 types of fruit have been moved to the 2nd stage of the project so that economic, marketing and postharvest evaluations can be made. Species being evaluated are: crawling cacti (Selenicereus megalanthus and 3 Hylocereus spp.); cactus apple (Cereus peruvianus); white sapote (Casimiroa edulis); and desert apple (Ziziphus mauritiana). Marula (Sclerocarya birrea subsp. caffra) and argan (Argania spinosa) are under consideration for inclusion in the 2nd stage of the project. Characteristics of these species and their p

erformance are described.
