Economics of storage structures in Soraba Taluk of Shimoga District, Karnataka.

A study is presented on the indigenous types of storage available in Soraba Taluk, Shimoga District, Karnataka, India. Data were collected during 1993/94, from 135 farmers. The most popular storage structure was a wooden box, situated outside, on a thick wooden platform about two feet above the ground, with a square door near the top of the structure for filling it with rice. Some structures had a small opening at the bottom for emptying. Similar structures, but made from bamboo mats were also found. The costs, both in construction, and later from post-harvest losses are examined.
