Effects of postharvest pretreatments on vaselife of cut rose 'Mary de Vor'.

The effects of postharvest pretreatments (tap water for 2 h, 3% sucrose solution for 4 h, treatment with 3 mM Al2(SO4)3 solution for 10 min followed by 3% sucrose solution for 4 h, or 0.3% Chrysal RVB for 4 h) on the vase life of cut rose (cv. Mary de Vor) flowers were investigated. Flowers pretreated with Al2(SO4)3 + 3% sucrose had a longer vase life than control flowers (8.6 compared with 7.3 days), and exhibited good quality (largest flower diameter, little development of neck bending and little variation in flower FW). Pretreatment of flowers in tap water did not promote flower opening, but prolonged vase life, reduced the incidence of bent neck, and increased FW compared with controls. Flowers pretreated with 0.3% chrysal RVB had the shortest vase life, the highest incidence of bent neck and the lowest FW; flower opening was not promoted by this treatment.
