Evaluation of epiphytic bacteria isolated from apple leaves in the control of postharvest apple diseases.

Of 107 isolates of epiphytic bacteria originating from apple cv. Idared leaves, 13 inhibited in vitro growth of Botrytis cinerea, 13 inhibited Penicillium expansum but only 6 inhibited growth of B. cinerea and P. expansum. In vitro antifungal activity of a particular isolate did not always corresponded with its ability to control grey and blue moulds on apples. Most of the isolates with in vitro antifungal activity were not active in vivo. Some isolates that were not active in vitro provided good protection of stored apples. Two isolates protected apples stored at 20 deg C but not at 4 deg . Eight isolates representing different morphological groups effectively controlled both grey and blue moulds on apples stored at 4 deg .
