Polybag packaging to control anthracnose of banana.

Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum musae is the main factor responsible for postharvest decay of West Indian bananas. Necrosis begins developing during fruit storage and ripening phases. The advantages of packaging banana bunches in sealed plastic bags (polybags) compared with standard polyfilm packaging are discussed. During a 28-d storage period at 13.5 deg C, rates of fungal rot development and fruit ripening were considerably slowed down when polybags were kept sealed. Over shorter storage periods, the results obtained with polybags and polyfilm were almost identical. The polybag effect during a longer storage period was due to a modification of O2 and CO2 levels in bags and not to reduced fruit water loss.
