Importance of ethylene on non-climacteric fruit and vegetables.

The storage life of non-climacteric strawberries, lettuces and beans [Phaseolus vulgaris] at 20 or 0 deg C was continuously extended by reducing the concentration of ethylene in the storage atmosphere over the range 10 to 0.005 micro l/litre. The ethylene concentration that accumulated around produce in the markets (Sydney, Australia) was in the range 0.06-1.17 micro l/litre suggesting that premature aging was occurring in most non-climacteric produce during normal marketing. The inclusion of potassium permanganate (absorbed onto beads) in packages with strawberries and lettuces reduced the ethylene concentration in the packages and extended storage life, although the reduced ethylene concentration did not fall below 0.02 micro l/litre, suggesting further improvements would be attained with a more efficient absorbent.
