Influence of nitrogen fertilization on the susceptibility of nectarines to pathogens and pests.

The effect of nitrogen fertilization at 110, 200, 280 and 360 kg N/ha on the vegetative production of nectarine cv. Fantasia and its susceptibility to Monilia fructigena [Monilinia fructigena] and the tortricids Cydia and Anarsia was examined in California during 1991-93. Trees treated with 110 kg N/ha gave satisfactory vegetative production which was superior to that of trees treated with higher doses of nitrogen. High doses of nitrogen led to a reduction in the colour of fruit, a delay in maturation and a major risk of nitrogen leaching. There was no effect of nitrogen dose on the quality of fruit postharvest. The dose of nitrogen was positively correlated with infections by M. fructigena on the flowers, green fruits and mature fruits. There was also a positive correlation between dose of nitrogen and damage to fruits by Cydia and Anarsia.
