The effect of time of pruning and fruit thinning on yield and fruit quality of 'Sensation' mangoes.

Postharvest pruning and pruning after fruit set were evaluated as measures to maintain tree size of 6-year-old Sensation (at Nelspruit) and Tommy Atkins (near Malelane) trees in 1994-95 and 1995-96. During the first season after pruning of Sensation trees, control trees had a higher yield than pruned trees. Yields of the trees pruned in October were higher than those of controls during the second season. Trees pruned and thinned in October and November had more uniform fruits of a larger size than the controls for both seasons. Although TSS values of fruits from the October treatment were higher than those for the other treatments, fruits from all the treatments were ripe after postharvest storage (28 days at 11 deg C plus 2 days at 23 deg ). No significant differences were found in fruit firmness and internal colour between the different treatments. Postharvest pruning and pruning combined with fruit thinning in October synchronized fruit maturity. Tommy Atkins trees pruned after harvest had a

lower yield than control trees, but fruit mass was not affected. Fruits from pruned Tommy Atkins trees had a better external colour than fruits from control trees. No significant differences were found in internal colour, pulp pressure and TSS values between the pruned and unpruned Tommy Atkins trees.
