Alternatives to methyl bromide for fumigation of wildflowers.

The fumigants ethyl formate (eranol), carbon disulphide, metham sodium [metam] and phosphine were applied to a range wild flowers both alone and in carbon dioxide enriched atmospheres, in the laboratory. Adults of Oryzaephilus surinamensis and larvae of the tortricid Strepsicrates ejectana were used as test insects. All fumigants proved to be effective against the insects but, with the exception of phosphine, their effects on flowers and foliage were unacceptable.
