Antifungal activity in fruits and postharvest disease.

Antifungal activity in fruits and its role in postharvest disease is discussed. Experiments have revealed that latex, which is present in some fruits, is an effective and safe postharvest fungicide for some diseases of banana, pawpaws and wood apples [Limonia acidissima]. Freckle disease (Phyllosticta musarum) of bananas is associated with accumulation of antifungal compounds. Freckling suppresses anthracnose development in ripe bananas and it is suggested that freckling may be a useful method for controlling anthracnose.
