Influence of various films and low ethylene CA conditioner on gas compositions and quality of 'Fuji' apple fruits in plastic bags during short term storage.

Apple cv. Fuji fruits, 8-9 months after harvesting, were stored for 21 days in film bags (with varying permeabilities to O2, CO2 and water), with/without LCA conditioner (capable of maintaining a low ethylene atmosphere), at 5 deg C. Postharvest quality of fruits and changes of gas composition in the film bags were investigated during storage. All treatments, regardless of the addition of LCA conditioner, maintained flesh firmness and fresh weight, but the concentration of soluble solids decreased during storage. Apples had a good visual appearance and the gas composition inside the bag was 15-17% CO2 and 5-7% O2, with very low concentration of ethylene, after storage in anti-fog film (25 micro m thick) with LCA conditioner. The addition of LCA conditioner reduced the percentage of rotting fruits. In a second experiment, fruits were stored for 49 days either in a transportation box (control), or in a film bag (20 micro m thick, PVDC-coated film) with LCA conditioner in a transportation box. Appl

es stored in the film bag with LCA conditioner maintained flesh firmness, had a good visual appearance, and exhibited reduced rotting caused by microorganisms, compared with the control.
