New crops in the U.S.A.

The development of new crops involves a complex process of plant selection, developing the appropriate production technology and marketing. During the past 10 years the USDA in cooperation with the US flower industry has developed a series of new ornamental products for US consumers. The process has required a large investment and is high risk since the outcome is unpredictable. It is suggested that the evaluation of new subjects should include an assessment of production time in relation to the cost of production and selling price. Before a new crop can be introduced demand potential should be assessed. Stability and longevity of the product in transport as well as postharvest quality should be evaluated. Results of research and the introduction of several new crops including Cupressus cv. Goldcrest, dwarf Eustoma, cut flower Ornithogalum, Lachenalia, Coprosma, Aeschynanthus, Gerbera, dwarf Clematis, Anigozanthos, Chamelaucium and Eucrosia bicolor are discussed.
