'Equinox' heat-tolerant hybrid tomato.

Equinox, a hybrid from the cross Fla. 7324 x Fla. 7060, is a determinate, heat-tolerant, fresh-market tomato hybrid that sets a high percentage of marketable fruit in spring and autumn in Florida. The high temperature fruit-setting ability is similar to that of Solar Set. Under 30-33 deg C/21-25 deg C day/night temperatures, fruit set is superior to that of most large-fruited cultivars, but flowers abort in the early trusses. For autumn crops, Equinox can be planted 2 weeks later than heat-sensitive cultivars and yet yields more fruit on the same harvest date. The primary advantage of Equinox over Solar Set and some other heat-tolerant cultivars is the relatively smooth blossom scar, which results in more reliable marketable fruit production during cooler cropping seasons. Fruit from Equinox plants has a glossy appearance and good resistance to cracking and rain checking. Total marketable yield (in terms of 11.3-kg boxes/ha) for the autumn crop was 3217-6432 boxes at 3 sites, 1991-93, and for th

e spring crop 4655-7497 boxes at 3 sites, 1992-93. Equinox is resistant to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici races 1 and 2, Verticillium dahliae race 1 and Stemphylium solani. Equinox is similar to Solar Set, Sunny and Agriset 761 for low levels of detached-fruit water uptake and subsequent postharvest decay due to Erwinia sp.
