Postharvest quality of sapota fruits as influenced by soil application of calcium.

Gypsum (0, 1, 2 or 4 kg per tree) was applied to fruiting sapota [sapodilla] cv. Kalipatti trees. Trees were irrigated after gypsum application, and once every week following treatment. Fruits were harvested 6 weeks after treatment, and allowed to ripen under ambient conditions. Fruits from trees treated with gypsum exhibited decreased water loss, maintained higher firmness and exhibited increased storage life compared with control fruits. Gypsum treatment did not significantly affect the total soluble solids content and total sugar content of fruits, although the Ca content of gypsum-treated fruits was higher. Gypsum treatment improved the storage quality of fruits in terms of appearance, pulp colour, taste, firmness, aroma and texture.
