The influence of pre- and post-harvest application of seaweed extract on early production and storage of cucumber.

Foliar application of a seaweed extract, Maxicrop Concentrate (50 ml/litre applied 3 times at fortnightly intervals starting on 27 Apr.) increased the growth rate (plant height) and early yield of cucumber cv. Picolino plants (seeds sown on 17 Mar.), but not that of cv. 2461-RZ plants (controls sprayed with water). Foliar applications had no effect on fruit yellowing or loss of chlorophyll during storage for 3 weeks at 15 deg C, but at 12 deg , Maxicrop treatment reduced the intensity of yellowing in cv. 2461-RZ while increasing that of cv. Picolino. Postharvest Maxicrop dip treatments (10, 25 or 50 ml/litre for 30 min) had no effect on chlorophyll degradation or fruit yellowing in cv. Picolino stored at 12 or 15 deg , but the intensity of yellowing in cv. 2461-RZ was reduced. For comparison, fruits were also dipped in 50 p.p.m. GA3 before storage. In cv. Picolino fruits stored at 20 deg , both Maxicrop and GA3 dip treatments reduced yellowing intensity but chlorophyll degradation was less with

GA3 than Maxicrop.
