Effect of gibberellin-paste applications on fruit growth and ripening in pears (Pyrus communis L. var. sativa DC.).

GA paste (2.7% GA3 + small amounts of GA1, GA4, GA7 and GA9) was applied to the stalks of pear cv. Le Lectier fruits 20-160 days after full bloom (DAFB). Fruits treated 35 DAFB were heavier than untreated controls, but the other application times had no effect on fruit growth. GA paste application 35 or 50 DAFB accelerated postharvest ripening (ethylene production) at room temperature compared with controls. In a further trial, GA paste was applied to the fruit stalks of pear cultivars La France, Marguerite Marillat and Le Lectier and to those of Asian pear [P. pyrifolia] cv. Shinko. In La France pears, both GA treatments significantly increased fruit weight and accelerated fruit ripening. In Marguerite Marillat and Le Lectier pears, applications had no significant effect on fruit growth and ripening, although ethylene evolution tended to start earlier than in controls. GA treatments significantly increased fruit weight in Asian pears, the effect being more marked than in the European pears. Eff

ects on ripening were not measured in the Asian pear cultivar.
