Prolongation of the vase life of cut carnation flowers by treatment with a combination of cis-propenylphosphonic acid and alpha -aminoisobutyric acid.

The effect of cis-propenylphosphonic acid (PPOH) and alpha -aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) on the vase life of cut carnation cv. Coral flowers was investigated. In both continuous and pulse treatments, vase life increased markedly with PPOH + AIB (up to 12.2 days with continuous treatment) compared with treatment with each compound alone (7.6 and 5.0 days, respectively), and their equimolar combination exerted the highest activity. The combination of PPOH and AIB was considered synergistic. When applied as a pulse treatment, the 20 mM equimolar combination was comparable with 0.2 mM silver thiosulfate, which is used commercially to prolong vase life. These results show that the combination of PPOH and AIB may be useful in postharvest preservation of cut carnation flowers.
