Microbial population on apple peels and their effect on two major pathogen in apple.

Analysis of peel microflora of 8 apple varieties freshly-harvested or market-sold indicated a population of 4.87x103 c.f.u.-7.38x105 c.f.u. and 2.63x102 c.f.u.-4.75x103 c.f.u. of bacteria and fungi/g of peel, respectively. A total of 273 bacterial strains and 75 fungal strains were obtained after isolation and purification. In plate tests, 77 bacteria and 20 fungi were antagonistic to 2 major storage pathogens, Glomerella cingulata and Macrophoma kawatsukai. Nine strains showed extensive inhibition of the 2 pathogens, effectively reducing apple rot to different degrees when the pathogens were inoculated to fruits. Strains NA-W42 and K'B-X71 controlled anthracnose by 96.3% and 88.9%, respectively, and strain PG-W11a inhibited ring rot by 55.6%.
