The future of methyl bromide in the Northwest fruit industry.

The use of methyl bromide as a fumigant for harvested fruit produced in the NW USA (some of which is exported to Japan) is discussed in relation to the Montreal Treaty of 1987 (in which the United Nations aimed to freeze the growth in halon production by 1998), its revision in November 1992 to reduce methyl bromide production and emission (with some exemptions for essential uses), and the 1990 Clean Air Act (which aims to phase out production and import by 1 January 2001, but does not allow for quarantine exemptions). Progress towards minimizing emission by recycling using a zeolite system is described and data on the potential use and economic assessment of the method are tabulated.
