Effect of post harvest application of some chemicals on the shelf life of ber (Zizyphus mauritiana Lamk) fruits.

Fruits of Zizyphus [Ziziphus] mauritiana cv. Umran, harvested at the colour-turning stage, received postharvest dips for 15 min in ascorbic acid (150 or 300 ppm), Cycocel [chlormequat] (500 or 1000 ppm) or KMnO4 (0.05 or 0.1%). Fruits were packed in wooden boxes with newspaper as lining material and stored at room temperature (25 plus or minus 5 deg C). All the chemicals decreased physiological weight loss of the fruits during storage. Decay loss was decreased by KMnO4, was not significantly affected by Cycocel and was increased by ascorbic acid treatment. Cycocel was considered the most suitable chemical for improving shelf-life.
