Experimental results and experiences in the control of superficial scald in apple.

 

Methods for the control of superficial scald, a physiological disorder occurring during the storage of apples, are described and assessed, based on 20 years of research at the Agricultural Research Centre Laimburg (data presented). In the South of Tyrol until 1985, the antioxidants ethoxyquin and diphenylamine were common postharvest treatments for fruits of susceptible cultivars such as Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Winesap and Morgenduft. Associated with improved storage techniques, particularly ULO [ultra-low oxygen] storage, such treatments are now restricted to susceptible cultivars stored for more than 90-120 d. Alternative treatments to chemical postharvest scald control, including the removal of ethylene from the storage atmosphere, water treatments and ultrasound treatments, have failed to provide satisfactory scald control.
