Persimmon, loquat, fig, pomegranate and prickly pear in Israel.

Loquat production in Israel occupies 300 ha in organized, highly productive, plantations. Almost all the cultivated varieties are local selections. Fig is widely known but production has been limited to date. Persimmon production underwent rapid development during the 1970s, and postharvest development is well developed. Pomegranate production has declined due to a limited domestic and international market. Prickly pear is mostly used as a fence plant, and fruits are consumed locally. Some selection has taken place to improve yields, although market saturation has now occurred.
