Relationship between incidence of blast in wheat heads and the presence of Pyricularia grisea in the harvested seeds.

During 1990-91, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, the field incidence of wheat blast (P. [Magnaporthe] grisea) in different cultivars and breeding lines was studied in relation to its presence in harvested seed. In each trial, 16-21 genotypes were tested in the lab., and only the spikes that showed characteristic symptoms (black point infection in rachis) were considered infected. The presence of M. grisea in seed was determined using the blotter test. The least infection index was observed on the BH 1146 cultivar (max. 4.7%) and the highest on Anahuac (99.5%). The percentage of seed carrying M. grisea varied from 0% on BH 1146 to 26.7% on Anahuac. Correlation between field incidence of wheat blast and percentage of seed with M. grisea in different genotypes was positive and significant both in 1990 (r=0.88, P=0.01; r=0.92, P=0.01) and in 1991 (r=0.92, P=0.01; r=0.96, P=0.01; r=0.89, P=0.01).
