Influence of low temperature storage on longevity of cut spikes of tuberose.

Polianthes tuberosa spikes were harvested from a field trial in 1991-92 and wrapped in a single layer of cellophane and kept at 4 deg C for 24, 48 or 72 hours. Subsequently, spikes were held in a vase solution of 2% sucrose + 200 ppm 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate. Vase life was longest with a low temperature storage time of 48 hours. However, total postharvest life was longest with storage for 72 hours. Size of 2nd floret decreased with time in storage, whereas longevity of open floret was highest with storage for 24 hours. The volume of vase solution absorbed by the spike increased with time in storage.
