A new post-harvest disease of okra pods caused by Alternaria alternata.

Alternaria rot of Abelmoschus esculentus pods caused by A. alternata is described as a new postharvest disease. The disease was frequently found in the markets of Japan. The opt. temp. for mycelial growth of the fungus was >20 deg C. However, expression of disease symptoms was greatly promoted at low temp. and became evident after prolonged exposure at 10 deg C in the lab. It is suggested that previously recorded chilling injury or Alternaria rot of A. esculentus pods may have had the same symptoms as those reported.
