Postproduction quality of potted PatioHit(R) roses.

In order to establish a standard keeping quality test aimed at assessing the postproduction quality of roses from different growers, 9 cultivars of PatioHit(R) roses were evaluated over a 21-day period. One of the important criteria in postproduction quality is the developmental stage at the time of sale, therefore plants were obtained with either 1-2 or 3-4 flowers. All plants were placed in simulated transport for 4 days and then held in an evaluation room for a further 17 days. It was found that the developmental stage at the time of simulated transport significantly influenced the total number of flowers and the number of good flowers during the postproduction evaluation period. Developmental stage had no effect on the percentage of damaged and wilted flowers and on a keeping quality value given to the plants. Cultivars Nova Hit(R), Perfect Hit(R) and 3388 demonstrated superior postproduction characteristics to the other cultivars.
