Source-sink relations in cut roses during vase life.

The carbohydrate content of rose cultivars Sonia and Madelon which differ in flower bud opening characteristics was measured during vase life. At the start of the experiment leaves (sources) or corollas (sinks) were removed, or stems were left intact. Carbohydrate content of the corolla was lower when leaves were removed, and carbohydrate contents of leaves were higher when the corolla had been removed. It is suggested that the cultivar whose flower buds opened well was probably more able to import carbohydrates from the leaves and the stem than the cultivar exhibiting poor bud opening. Besides being the source of sugars for the flower bud, the leaves also play a role in translocating sugars from the vase solution into the bud.
