Carbohydrate status of cut freesia flowers.

Bud opening of some freesia cultivars in water is sometimes poor. In some cases 40-50% of the buds of harvested inflorescences do not develop into flowers of good quality. The right stage of maturity at harvest is one of the factors which determines flower bud opening, apparently by influencing the carbohydrate status of the bud. Carbohydrate status (content of glucose, fructose, sucrose and starch) was determined and the length of the bud was measured in Freesia cultivars Aladin and Polaris harvested when the first bud was at 3 different stages of maturity. Measurements were carried out on the day of harvest and after 4 days in water. The carbohydrate content of mature flowers was 1.5-2 times higher than that of immature flowers. The length of individual flower buds and the percentage of flowering was greatest when the flowers were harvested at the most mature stage.
