High air humidity reduces the keeping quality of cut roses.

Two rose cultivars were grown at 4 air humidities (65, 75, 85 or 90% RH) at 19 deg C in growth chambers. RH had small effects on shoot length and FW. Increasing the RH from 65 to 85% had no effect on the vase life of the roses, while a further increase to 90% significantly decreased it. High humidity during the last 3 weeks of the growing period was more detrimental than high humidity during the first 3 weeks. This decrease in vase life was closely related to an increase in the occurrence of bent necks and leaf drying at the highest RH. Measurements of the water loss from detached leaves showed significantly higher values in leaves produced at 90% RH than in those produced at the lower RHs.
