Export of 14C-sucrose, 3H-water, and fluorescent tracers from gladiolus florets to other plant parts associated with senescence.

Solutions of 14C-sucrose and 3H-water were fed to full unfolded perianths of lower florets on cut gladiolus cv. Fujinoyuki spikes. When the fed perianths completely wilted, substantial quantities of 14C and 3H were recovered from the other perianths, ovaries, leaves and stalks of the spikes. After feeding solutions of fluorescein (FL) and 6(5)-carboxyfluorescein (CF) to unfolded perianths of the first florets, transverse sections were prepared and observed with a fluorescence microscope. When the fed perianths began to wilt, FL appeared in the phloem region of the ovary of the first and fifth floret. CF appeared in the perianth margin of the fifth floret. It appeared in the xylem region and tissues surrounding the vascular bundles in the ovary of the first floret. The results indicate that export of sucrose, water and other substances from perianths to other plant parts occurred in association with wilting of the perianths. These substances could be translocated through not only the phloem regio

n but also the xylem region and tissues outside the vascular bundles.
