Interaction between exposure time, temperature, and ethylene concentration on ethylene induced leaflet abscission.

The main factors which influence plant response to external ethylene are exposure time, temperature and ethylene concentration. To understand the responses to ethylene, it is necessary to consider the combined effect of these factors rather than that of the individual factors on the plant. Leaf abscission in Radermachera sinica following ethylene exposure is well described. For this investigation, plants were exposed to ethylene for up to 72 h, at concentrations of 0.1, 1.0 or 10.0 micro l/litre at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 deg C. Also, a comparison was made of 8- to 10-week-old plants of R. sinica and fully developed leaves used as cuttings and of continuous and interrupted ethylene exposure. The intact plant system and continuous ethylene exposure provided the best indication of the ethylene response. The response of R. sinica to an ethylene concentration of 1.0 micro l/litre took twice as long at 20 deg as at 25 or 30 deg . There was no response to ethylene at 10 deg . In addition, at 20 deg , th

e response took twice as long when the exposure was to 0.1 than when it was to 10 micro l ethylene/litre.
