Prototype for a speedy yet delicate filling of containers with fresh fruit.

The rate of filling large bins with delicate fruit was increased by widening the opening for the fruit along the whole front of the container. Fruit was channelled during descent along two rows of counter-rotating foam-rubber rollers to prevent bruising. Fruit distribution on successive layers was maintained by horizontal back-and-forth movement combined with descending motion of the container. The fruit was then conveyed along rubber slide ways. Laboratory tests were carried out to verify the machine operating capacity using 3 different fruit quantities on the conveyors (6, 12 and 18 kg/m2) and 3 different fruit entry speeds (0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 m/s), giving operating capacities of 1.8-12.6 kg/s. Field tests using the "Multibasket" fruit harvesting prototype produced operating capacities of 6-7 kg/s, allowing the filling of a bin (240 kg of apples) in approx. 40 s. Damaged fruit occurrences (skinbreaks and bruises) were correlated with both the machine operating capacity, and fruit size and hardne

ss. Damage occurred to up to 7.8% of the more delicate cultivars (eg. Golden Delicious), at working speed 12.8 kg/s. Warehouse use of the "Multibasket" prototype is suggested.
