Review and prospects for use of controlled atmosphere technology in Mexican agribusiness.

Controlled atmosphere (CA) technology for storage of fruit and vegetables is reviewed. The 3 main methods used to produce the inert nitrogen gas used for CA applications (cryogenic distillation, pressure swing adsorption (PSA) system, and membrane systems) are discussed. CA applications, including transportation applications in intermodal containers and refrigerated ships are described. The prospects for the use of CA techniques in Mexico, and the benefits for Mexican agribusiness (maintaining product quality, increasing distribution flexibility, and increasing potential market size) are considered.
