Estimation of ripening index in avocado.

Avocado fruit moisture content was correlated with oil content and subjected to several simple and multiple regression equations in order to find a faster way to estimate the oil content for 8 avocado cultivars grown in Chile. The best oil content estimator was moisture content based on simple regression equations. The minimum oil content values at harvest for acceptable fruit quality were: 13.1% for Negra de la Cruz; 11% for Bacon; 10% for Zutano; 10.4% for Fuerte; 9.2% for Edranol; 11% for Hass; 10.3% for Gwen; and 10.6% for Whitsell. The corresponding minimum moisture content values were: 80.7% for Negra de la Cruz; 77.5% for Bacon; 80.5% for Zutano; 77.9% for Fuerte; 78.1% for Edranol; 73.8% for Hass; 78.4% for Gwen and 79% for Whitsell.
