ABSTRACT :

A biocontrol programme commenced in 1985 with the aim of reducing the dependency on fungicides by South African avocado growers. After an initial ecological study, a 2-pronged approach was initialized: bio-augmentation and biomanagement. Various microorganisms were isolated from avocado surfaces, identified to species or genus level and subsequently screened in vitro against Dothiorella aromatica and in vivo on avocado fruit. Promising isolates were further screened against other avocado postharvest pathogens. A post-harvest Bacillus subtilis dip and wax applications proved effective in reducing some diseases, although the level of efficacy varied. The most difficult obstacle to overcome has been the commercialization of the antagonist due to low profit margins and possible difficulties in registering a natural antagonist which may produce antibiotics on fruit. The future research of the biocontrol programme is discussed.
