Pathological aspects of the pineapple crop with emphasis on the fusariosis.

ABSTRACT :

Pineapple diseases including fruitlet core rot, leathery pocket, interfruitlet corking, base rot, white leaf spot, heart rot, root rot, yellow spot, sunburn, postharvest diseases (black rot, pink diseases and endogenous brown rot) and fusariosis are discussed with emphasis on their control. Economic importance, aetiology, symptomatology, factors influencing disease dissemination (propagation material, vectors, environmental conditions, inoculum source) and integrated control of fusariosis (Fusarium subglutinans [Gibberella fujikuroi var. subglutinans]) in Brazil are outlined. Disease dissemination through asexual propagation material is considered. It is emphasized that losses of marketable pineapple fruits due to fusariosis reach 80%, depending on the cultivar, inoculum potential and time of harvest.
