On postharvest physiology of Chinese kale (Brassica alboglabra).

ABSTRACT :

Plants (500 g) were put into sealed glass containers and kept at 20 deg C or put into polyethylene bags and kept at 0 deg . Respiration rate and ethylene production were climacteric, reaching a peak after 6 days when stored at 20 deg . During storage at 0 deg , reducing sugars and soluble protein contents declined in both stems and leaves but increased in the flower buds. Peroxidase activity increased in all parts during storage, and crude fibre content of the leaves also increased. When flower buds were removed, respiration rate and ethylene production declined, and the rate of senescence was reduced.
