Compression forces and damage in the postharvest handling system.

ABSTRACT :

 

A prototype low profile load sensor was developed to measure the static compressive loads (in bins and stacks) and dynamic compressive loads (bin handling and transport) experienced by products during postharvest handling. It provides a uniform sensitivity over the 65 mm diameter surface. Orchard bin handling was assessed using the device. Results of fruit bruising for 2 bin transport systems were used to develop base line damage levels, and identify the scope of the problem.
