Optimizing table grape storage by compromise.

ABSTRACT :

The principal limiting factors to the extended storage of Thompson Seedless grapes are cluster decay and desiccation of stems and pedicels. The recommended method for preventing the development of these two problems during export and transport at 0 deg C is polyethylene-lined packaging including a dual stage sulfur dioxide generator. The method, however, has its drawbacks, as under certain conditions it may be phytotoxic. Optimal packing and handling conditions for control of decay and desiccation without concomitant injury have, therefore, been defined for Thomson Seedless grapes. The use of SO2 has also been questioned and preharvest and postharvest alternatives have been examined. However, so far none have been found to be as efficient as SO2 in controlling decay development.
