Improving the postharvest handling and quality of horticultural crops. Roles of research, technology, and education.

ABSTRACT :

The substantial losses suffered by horticultural products during marketing result from their intrinsic perishability, and from the manifold environmental and physical influences to which they are subjected after harvest. Continuing developments in research will provide products with less susceptibility to postharvest degradation, but most of the important factors influencing deterioration are well understood. The weakest links in the marketing chain are now the provision of the technology and infrastructure required for optimal postharvest handling, and education of all participants in the postharvest chain. Modern technologies for education, and for monitoring the postharvest environment, and increasing attention to product quality, promise to accelerate this critical education process. New research areas are identified and a list of information sources is provided.
