Kiwifruit worldwide.

ABSTRACT :

Information presented at the eleventh meeting of the International Kiwifruit Organisation, held in Santiago, Chile, in 1993, is reported. The kiwifruit production area of some major producers, notably New Zealand and Chile, is declining because it is not possible to find outlets at acceptable prices. Elsewhere, productive area is stagnant (France, Italy, Japan and California) or increasing (Greece and others). A total area of 69 000 ha is estimated for 1993, showing a slight decline, whilst output has risen slightly. The 1992/93 season was the worst on record for kiwifruit; eradication of the plants is nevertheless not seen as worth consideration. Prospects for 1993/94 are slightly improved. The competitive position worldwide is outlined, indicating harvesting periods and markets. Attempts to reach agreement on a fair distribution of market access by controlling harvesting periods has not been successful. The current production status of the principal producing countries (Italy, Chile and France

) is outlined. Trends in area, prices, output, productivity and markets in these countries are noted. Other problems discussed at the meeting include the establishment of a world fund for promotional marketing, protectionism, industrial processing, postharvest technology and possible future members of the IKO.
